A Cookie Fell in Room 214
Chapter 1: 214
The first strange thing that happened at the Career Center was a cookie.
That was the part that bothered me the most.
Not because a cookie falling or a mop moving was impossible. I have spent enough years cleaning buildings to know that old places make noises. Things shift. Doors move. Objects fall. Air pressure changes. Shelves settle.
But sometimes, something happens in a quiet building when nobody else is around, and you are left standing there asking yourself a question you cannot answer:
Did that really just happen?
I worked as a custodian at a local Career Center. It was not an old, abandoned place. It was a normal building where students came every day to learn trades and prepare for jobs. There were classrooms for healthcare training, computer labs, workshops, offices, and hallways filled with the sounds of teenagers talking and laughing.
During the day, the building felt alive.
But after everyone left, it became something else.
At night, the halls stretched longer. The lights hummed above you. The smell of cleaning chemicals mixed with old books, dust, and the faint scent of whatever food students had forgotten in their classrooms.
I always thought there was something comforting about cleaning after hours.
