Clara the Cow and the Little Lost Lamb

Chapter 1: Gentle Care

In a gentle green valley called Meadowmere, there lived a young cow named Clara. Clara had soft brown spots, a bell that clinked when she walked, and a quiet, thoughtful way about her. She wasn't the fastest or the loudest in the valley, but she had a talent that was easy to miss: she noticed things.

She noticed when Daisy the duck wasn't singing her morning song. She noticed when Old Mr. Goat limped a little on his left hoof. She noticed when someone sat alone at the edge of the pasture.

"Why do you always look so closely at everyone?" asked her friend Barney the pig one morning. "It's none of our business."

"I'm not trying to pry," said Clara. "I just want to know if anyone needs a friend."

Barney laughed. "That sounds like a lot of work for nothing."

Clara only smiled and went on munching her clover.

One misty afternoon, a cold wind swept across the valley, and gray clouds gathered over the hills. The animals hurried home to their barns and burrows. Clara was heading home too, when she heard a faint sound drifting through the fog.

Baa... baa...

She stopped and listened. It was so quiet that anyone else might have missed it. She followed the sound to the edge of the old stone wall, where a tiny lamb stood shivering, his wool damp and his eyes wide with fear.

"Hello, little one," said Clara softly. "What's your name?"
