Coco the Chameleon and the Colors Within
Chapter 1: Believe in Yourself
In a sunny jungle called Rainbow Ridge, there lived a young chameleon named Coco. Coco had bright, curious eyes and a curly tail, and she could change her colors faster than anyone in the jungle.
But Coco had a secret. She didn't like being herself.
"If I blend in, nobody will notice me," she would whisper. "And if nobody notices me, nobody can laugh."
So when the parrots squawked at the morning concert, Coco turned bright green and hid in the leaves. When the monkeys played tag, she turned brown and stayed by the tree trunk. When her teacher asked, "Does anyone know the answer?" Coco turned the same gray as the classroom wall and kept her eyes on the floor, even though she often knew it.
"I'm not good at singing," she told herself. "I'm too slow at games. My ideas are silly. It's better to stay hidden."
One afternoon, the animals of Rainbow Ridge began planning the Great Jungle Show. There would be songs, dances, and a grand painting to hang in the village square.
"We need someone to paint the big picture," said Mrs. Toucan. "Any volunteers?"
Coco's heart skipped. She loved to paint. At home, she painted jungle sunsets, waterfalls, and glowing fireflies, and she had hidden every picture under her bed.
Her hand twitched, but she shrank back and turned the color of the wall. "Someone else will do it better," she thought.
Instead, a loud-voiced peacock named Pavo volunteered. "I'll do it! It'll be magnificent!"
