Eleven Days and No Check
Chapter 1: Letter
The envelope stayed on the kitchen counter for eleven days.
It was pale blue, with the unemployment office logo in one corner. Each morning, Mara moved it away from the coffee maker. Each evening, she placed it beside the chipped bowl where they kept loose change, dead batteries, and forgotten keys.
The envelope was empty. The check had not come yet.
Still, Daniel tapped it whenever he walked past, as if money might appear inside if he reminded it of its purpose.
“Any update?” he would ask.
“I checked this morning.”
“And?”
“Still processing.”
He would nod, already looking at his phone.
Three weeks earlier, Mara had been called into a glass meeting room at the insurance office where she had worked for six years. Her manager placed a box of tissues between them before saying anything. That was how Mara knew. The company was restructuring. Her position had been eliminated. None of it reflected her performance.
