Eli and the Lantern Walk

Chapter 1: Different Night View

Eli’s lantern was shaped like a pear.

It was supposed to be shaped like the moon.

But the paper had bent at one side, and the bottom had gone a little pointy.

Papa placed a small battery light inside.

The paper glowed warm yellow.

Eli smiled.

For three days, he had waited for the neighbourhood lantern walk. He had watched Papa cut the paper, helped stick it around the frame, and chosen a ribbon for the handle.

Now the evening had arrived.

Outside, the sky was turning blue-grey.
