Fern the Fawn and the Three Paths
Chapter 1: Choose your friends wisely
In a sunlit forest called Greenhollow, there lived a young fawn named Fern. Fern had speckled spots, big gentle eyes, and a heart that wanted very much to belong.
When school started, she walked into the clearing feeling shy. Three groups of animals were already playing, and each one waved her over.
"Come play with us!" called the first group, a trio of loud, flashy foxes. "We're the coolest in the forest."
"Join us!" called the second group, a pair of crows whispering behind their wings. "We know everyone's secrets."
"Care to sit with us?" asked the third group, a quiet cluster of a rabbit, a hedgehog, and a duckling, who were sharing a basket of berries.
Fern wasn't sure. The foxes looked exciting. The crows seemed important. The third group seemed... ordinary.
"I'll try them all," she decided.
On Monday, she played with the foxes. They raced through the woods, shouting and showing off. But when a little squirrel tripped and dropped her acorns, the foxes laughed. "Look at clumsy Squirrel!" they cackled. Fern laughed too, but her tummy felt twisty.
On Tuesday, she sat with the crows. They leaned in close. "Did you hear what Mouse said about Rabbit?" they whispered. "And Hedgehog's house is such a mess!" Fern nodded, but she felt uneasy. If they talk about everyone this way, she wondered, what do they say about me when I leave?
On Wednesday, she sat with the quiet group. The rabbit smiled. "We saved you a berry." The hedgehog asked, "How was your first week?" and actually listened to the answer. The duckling shared a funny story and made everyone giggle.
