The Friend Who Slowly Disappeared
Chapter 1:
The first thing I noticed was the coffee mug.
It was a small, chipped blue mug that had been sitting on the same kitchen shelf for years. The handle was slightly cracked, and tiny white flowers faded around the rim. It wasn’t expensive or beautiful in the way people usually describe beautiful things.
Most people would have thrown it away.
But my friend Sophie loved it.
She used to say old things deserved patience.
“Everyone wants things without flaws,” she told me once while carefully washing the mug with warm water. “But sometimes the things with cracks are the things that have survived the most.”
At the time, I thought she was talking about the mug.
Years later, I understood she might have been talking about herself.
Sophie was the kind of person who remembered everything.
She knew exactly how her coworkers liked their coffee. She never forgot birthdays. She saved handwritten notes and old greeting cards because she believed words carried pieces of people.
