Great-Grandma’s Second Chance
Chapter 1: Respect your husband.
By the time she was eighteen, my great-grandmother’s future had already been decided for her.
There was no romantic proposal, no secret courtship, and no long conversation about the kind of life she hoped to build. Her family arranged her marriage to a man twenty-five years older than she was. To everyone around her, it seemed practical and respectable.
To her, it must have felt like being handed a life that belonged to someone else.
On the morning of her wedding, older women moved around her, adjusting her dress and offering familiar advice.
“Be patient.”
“Respect your husband.”
“A good wife keeps her family together.”
No one asked whether she was afraid. No one asked whether she wanted to marry him. At eighteen, she was expected to smile, lower her eyes, and accept what had been chosen for her.
Her husband was already a fully grown man with fixed habits and a hard personality. He drank heavily, and when he did, the little kindness he possessed disappeared. His voice grew louder, his temper became shorter, and the whole house seemed to change when he walked through the door.
My great-grandmother learned to recognize his mood by the sound of his footsteps.
