Gus the Goat and the Jar of Thank-You's

Chapter 1: Gratitude

In a hilly village called Pebblebrook, there lived a young goat named Gus. Gus was a cheerful little fellow who loved climbing rocks and chasing butterflies. But Gus had a habit that he didn't even notice: he always focused on what he didn't have.

"Why do I only get oat porridge?" he would sigh at breakfast. "Daisy gets honey cakes!"

"My boots are so old," he'd grumble. "Everyone else has shiny new ones."

"This blanket is too scratchy," he'd mutter at bedtime. "I wish I had a softer one."

His Mama Goat patiently kept making porridge, mending boots, and tucking in blankets. But Gus never noticed. He was too busy wishing for something else.

One rainy afternoon, Gus sat at the window with his chin in his hooves. "Nothing good ever happens to me," he sighed.

*Knock, knock, knock.*

At the door stood Grandpa Billy, the oldest and kindest goat in Pebblebrook. He carried an old glass jar tucked under his arm.

"Hello, Gus," he said with a twinkle. "You look as gloomy as the weather. I brought you something."

He handed Gus the jar. It was empty, except for a little stack of paper slips and a tiny pencil tied to the lid with string.
