He Asked Her Out for Ice Cream
Chapter 1: Then Took Her Home to Marry Her
The first time Mai told us how her parents met, she waited until everyone was eating lunch.
She had a gift for timing. She could tell when the office had become too quiet—when all we could hear was the humming refrigerator in the break room and the soft tapping of someone answering emails at the table. That was when she would casually offer a story guaranteed to stop every conversation.
“My dad kidnapped my mom,” she announced.
Three forks froze in midair.
“You can’t just say something like that while I’m eating,” Daniel said.
Mai smiled and opened her yogurt. “Why not?”
“Because now I have questions.”
“That’s the point.”
She always began the story that way. Over time, I realized she enjoyed the first five seconds most—the confusion, the concern and the moment when everyone tried to decide whether she was joking.
Then she would laugh and explain.
