The Last Winter We Loved
Chapter 1: The Message That Changed Everything
The message came on a Thursday evening, just as Emma was watering the small plants on her apartment balcony.
It was a simple text from Daniel.
"Can we talk tonight? I need to tell you something important."
There was nothing unusual about the words themselves. People said things like that every day. Sometimes it meant a surprise. Sometimes it meant a problem. Sometimes it meant a conversation someone had been avoiding for too long.
But Emma knew.
Not because she had any proof.
Not because Daniel had acted differently.
She knew because somewhere deep inside, she had learned that the hardest conversations often announced themselves before they arrived.
For almost a year, Daniel had been the person who made her believe that love could be peaceful.
At 23, Emma had already experienced a relationship that left her exhausted. She knew what it felt like to constantly question someone’s feelings. She knew what it felt like to walk on eggshells, wondering if every argument was the beginning of the end.
