Husband Threatened Divorce
Chapter 1: Stains
The suitcase was open on the floor when my husband asked whether I had gotten my period.
I was in the UAE, preparing to fly to Pakistan the next day. Half-folded clothes covered the bed, my passport rested near the zipper of my carry-on, and every ordinary object in the room seemed to point toward the same thing: tomorrow, I would finally see him.
Long-distance marriage had taught me to measure life in departures and arrivals. A visit was never just a visit. It meant calendars, tickets, time away from work, and the hope that a few days together might make the months apart feel less heavy.
So when he asked the question, I did not think it was dangerous.
“Yes,” I told him. “It started.”
His mood changed so quickly that, at first, I wondered whether I had misunderstood him.
There was a pause. Then his voice sharpened.
He began yelling. He said he was done with me. He told me that if I did not come to Pakistan and go straight to a hospital for fertility testing, he would divorce me.
I sat very still, listening to the man I had married speak as if my body had betrayed him.
A period was something ordinary. It happened every month. Yet in that conversation, it became an accusation, a verdict, and proof of a failure I had not committed.
