Maisie and the Garden of Small Things

Chapter 1: Little Garden Big Dreams

On the morning of her fifth birthday, Maisie found a garden floating above her slippers.

It was no bigger than a pillow, with dark, crumbly earth and a fence made of crooked twigs. Nothing grew inside it.

Maisie blinked.

The garden stayed.

She peered underneath. There were her slippers, exactly where she had left them.

“Mum?” she called. “Is there supposed to be a garden in my bedroom?”

Mum appeared carrying a birthday crown.

“I can see a sock that needs picking up.”

Maisie looked from Mum to the garden.

Perhaps this was something that happened when you turned five.
