New Year Eve

Chapter 1: Invitation That Changed Everything

For most families, holidays were supposed to be simple.

A few days of laughter, familiar food, old stories, and pretending that everyone got along better than they actually did.

In my family, we had a system that worked for years. No one person carried the responsibility of every celebration. Hosting duties rotated between my parents, my sister, and me. One year someone hosted Thanksgiving, another person handled Christmas, and someone else took care of New Year’s Eve.

It was fair. It kept things balanced.

But over the years, things changed.

I was 33 years old, married, and the father of a two-year-old boy. Becoming a parent had completely changed my life. The sleepless nights, the constant planning, the new responsibilities—it was everything I expected and somehow nothing I expected at the same time.

My son had become the center of my world.

My sister, however, had chosen a very different path.

She was proudly child-free. She had always been open about not wanting kids, and I respected that. I never expected her to suddenly love parenting or become the kind of aunt who wanted to spend every weekend babysitting.

But after my son was born, our relationship changed.
