Nina the Ant and the Crooked Crumb Trail
Chapter 1: Faithful In Little Things
In a sunny garden called Clover Corner, there lived a little ant named Nina. Nina was small, even for an ant, and her job in the colony was small too. Each morning, she was asked to carry a single crumb from the edge of the garden path to the colony's storeroom.
One crumb. That was all.
Her cousin Archie, meanwhile, was chosen to help carry the great berry to the Queen's table. Everyone cheered when he marched by.
"Why do I only get crumbs?" Nina sighed, kicking a pebble. "Nobody notices a crumb. If I skipped it, who would even know?"
The next morning, she picked up her crumb, but she took a shortcut and dropped it under a leaf near the entrance, where nobody would look. "There," she muttered. "Close enough."
She did the same the day after, and the day after that. Sometimes she left the crumb halfway. Sometimes she forgot it altogether and spent the morning napping in the sun.
Nobody said a word. Nina told herself, See? It doesn't matter.
But Old Aunt Beetle, who watched the garden from a mossy stone, noticed everything.
One evening, she called Nina over. "Child, come sit with me."
Nina's antennae drooped. "Am I in trouble?"
