Oscar the Ox and the Buzzing Gnats
Chapter 1: Not Everyone Deserve Your Reaction
In a peaceful pasture called Daffodil Downs, there lived a young ox named Oscar. Oscar was big and strong, with a gentle heart and a hearty laugh. But Oscar had one weakness: he reacted to everything.
If someone teased him, he snorted and stomped. If someone made a rude joke, he bellowed back. If someone gave him a sideways look, he spent the whole afternoon fuming about it.
"Did you hear what Gnash said about me?" he would grumble to his friends. "I'll show him!"
At the center of Oscar's troubles was a swarm of tiny gnats led by a smirking little fellow named Gnash. Gnash loved nothing more than getting a rise out of others.
"Hey, Oscar!" Gnash would buzz, circling his ears. "Nice big ears! Do they flap in the wind?"
Oscar's face would turn red. "Stop that!" he would roar, swatting wildly.
The gnats would scatter, giggling, and return a moment later.
"Look how he flaps his tail!" they'd cheer. "Do it again, Oscar!"
Every time Oscar lost his temper, the gnats buzzed with delight. Every time he roared, they came back for more. And the angrier Oscar got, the worse he felt. His head ached. His heart pounded. He missed meals, lost sleep, and snapped at his friends, who had done nothing wrong.
One evening, Oscar sat alone beneath a willow tree, his shoulders sagging. "I'm so tired," he sighed. "I spend all day fighting, and I never win."
