Pearl the Penguin Chick and the Egg-Sitting Winter

Chapter 1: Patience

In an icy land called Frostglimmer Shore, there lived a young penguin chick named Pearl. Pearl had soft gray down, bright black eyes, and a very big problem: she could not wait for anything.

"Are we there yet?" she would ask, ten minutes into a walk.

"Is dinner ready yet?" she would ask, while Mama was still catching the fish.

"Why isn't it spring yet?" she would grumble, stamping her little feet in the snow.

When she planted a tiny seaweed seed in a pot, she dug it up the next morning to see if it had grown. When she tried to knit a scarf, she gave up after three stitches because it wasn't finished fast enough. And when her friends were playing a game that needed taking turns, she wriggled and fidgeted and shouted, "Hurry up! Hurry up!"

"Waiting is the worst," she told everyone. "It's just wasted time."

One frosty morning, Papa Penguin called her over. "Pearl, I have a very important job for you. Your cousin has gone fishing for the week, and she asked us to look after her egg. It must be kept warm on our feet, all day and all night, until it hatches."

Pearl's eyes lit up. "A real egg? When will it hatch?"

"Nobody knows exactly," said Papa gently. "It could be days. It could be weeks."

Pearl's face fell. "Weeks? That's forever!"
