Pip and the Broken Lantern

Chapter 1: Own Your Mistake

In a cozy forest called Mossy Hollow, there lived a young rabbit named Pip. Pip was quick on his feet and quicker with his jokes, and everyone in the forest liked him. But Pip had one problem: whenever he did something wrong, he hoped nobody would find out.

Every autumn, the animals of Mossy Hollow held the Lantern Festival. Each year, Old Tortoise brought out the Great Lantern, a beautiful glass lantern that glowed golden and lit up the whole forest. It had belonged to the animals of Mossy Hollow for a hundred years.

The day before the festival, Pip was racing around the clearing, playing tag with his friend Wren the sparrow.

"Catch me if you can!" Pip laughed, zooming past the old oak tree.

CRASH!

Pip skidded to a stop. His heart sank. On the ground lay the Great Lantern, its glass cracked right down the middle. In his hurry, Pip had bumped the table where it was resting.

Wren fluttered down beside him. "Oh no, Pip! The Great Lantern!"

Pip looked around. No one else had seen. His ears drooped, and his tummy twisted into a knot.

"Maybe we can just put it back," he whispered. "Nobody will know. Maybe they'll think the wind knocked it over."

Wren tilted her head. "But Pip, that wouldn't be true."
