Pip the Tiny Elephant and the Sky Full of Wishes
Chapter 1: A tiny elephant who wants to fly
In a golden grassland called Baobab Bend, there lived a very small elephant named Pip. Pip was the smallest elephant in the whole herd. His ears were big, his trunk was curly, and his legs were short, so he often had to trot twice as fast to keep up.
But Pip's dreams were enormous.
Every afternoon, he sat beneath the tallest baobab tree and watched the birds swoop and soar across the pink-gold sky. Swallows twirled. Eagles glided. Even the little bee-eaters zipped past like tiny rainbows.
"I wish I could fly," he sighed. "Just once."
"Elephants can't fly, Pip," said his cousin Tembo, who was twice his size. "We're too heavy."
"And you're too small," added another cousin, giggling. "Even smaller than a hippo's hat."
Pip's ears drooped. But that night, under the stars, he whispered, "Maybe elephants can't fly the way birds do. But I'm going to find out what I can do."
The next morning, he set off to learn.
First, he visited Kesi the eagle on her high rocky cliff. "Please, Kesi, teach me to fly!"
Kesi looked at him kindly. "Flying takes feathers and hollow bones, little one. I'm sorry, but I can't teach you that."
