Pippa the Pelican and the Stormy Sea Race
Chapter 1: Support Each Other
In a sparkling bay called Seashell Cove, there lived a young pelican named Pippa. Pippa had a big beak, strong wings, and a great love of racing. Every summer, the seabirds of the cove held the Grand Wave Race, a long flight across the bay and back, and the winner received the Silver Shell.
Pippa had trained hard all year. "This is my year," she told herself. "I'm going to win."
On race morning, the sky was clear and the water glittered. Dozens of seabirds lined up on the rocks: gulls, terns, puffins, and cormorants. Her best friends were there too. Gus the gull was a fast flyer but had a nervous stomach. Tern Tilly was small and quick. And little Pebble the puffin, the youngest racer, was flapping hard just to keep up.
"On your marks... get set... GO!"
Off they flew. Pippa surged ahead, wind rushing through her feathers. She was in the lead!
But halfway across the bay, the weather turned. Dark clouds rolled in, the wind howled, and the waves began to rise.
Pippa pushed on. The finish line was close, and the Silver Shell was within reach. She glanced back and saw the others struggling. Gus was being tossed about like a leaf. Tilly was fighting the wind. And far behind, little Pebble was dropping lower and lower, his tiny wings beating wildly as the waves crashed beneath him.
I could keep going, thought Pippa. If I stop, I'll lose.
She flew on a little farther. But Pebble's frightened cry carried over the storm. "Help! I can't... keep up!"
Pippa's heart tugged hard. She hovered in the air, torn between the shell and her friend. She looked ahead at the finish line, then behind at Pebble, who was sinking closer to the water.
