Remy the Rabbit and the Golden Carrot
Chapter 1: Rewards
In a cheerful village called Clover Hill, there lived a young rabbit named Remy. Remy had long floppy ears, quick feet, and a very big sweet tooth for praise.
"What will I get if I do it?" he would ask whenever someone requested his help.
"Remy, will you sweep the path?" asked Mrs. Hen.
"What's my reward?" said Remy.
"Remy, will you carry this basket?" asked Mr. Badger.
"Do I get a treat?" said Remy.
If the answer was no, he wandered off. If the answer was yes, he did the job quickly and carelessly, just enough to earn his prize. Then he held out his paw and waited.
One morning, the village announced the Harvest Fair, and the prize was a Golden Carrot, the finest award in Clover Hill. It would go to the animal who worked hardest all season in the community garden.
"That's mine!" said Remy. "I'll be the best worker in the village."
So he showed up at the garden every day, and he made sure everyone saw him. He watered the beans when the mayor was looking. He hauled a wheelbarrow when the teacher walked by. But when nobody was watching, he lay in the shade and napped.
