Rory the Raccoon and the Rolling Pebble

Chapter 1: Every action, big or small, has consequences that can affect others

In a hilly woodland called Thistle Ridge, there lived a young raccoon named Rory. Rory was clever and curious, and he loved a good bit of fun. But he had one habit: he acted first and thought later.

"It's just a little thing," he would say. "What's the harm?"

One bright morning, Rory climbed to the top of the tallest hill in Thistle Ridge. Below him, the whole village spread out like a picture book. There were cottages with curling smoke, a babbling brook, and a little footbridge where the animals crossed each day.

By his foot sat a small, round pebble.

"I wonder how far it would roll," Rory grinned. He gave it a tiny nudge.

Tick, tick, tick.

The pebble bounced down the slope, picking up speed. It knocked into a second pebble, which knocked into a third. Soon a whole stream of stones was clattering down the hill.

"Whoa!" laughed Rory. "Look at them go!"

But his laughter faded as the stones tumbled faster. They crashed onto the footbridge, and one heavy rock wedged itself right under the middle plank. CRACK! The bridge groaned and tilted, and the little brook began to flood around it.

Rory's stomach dropped. He crept back from the edge of the hill. "I didn't mean for that to happen," he whispered. "It was only a pebble."
