Stella the Star and the Pond Full of Sky

Chapter 1: A star that fell into the village pond

High above the village of Lilypad Hollow, in the great velvet dark of the night sky, there lived a little star named Stella. She was not the biggest star, nor the brightest, but she had a soft silver twinkle and a very curious heart.

Every night, Stella looked down at the world below. She saw the tiny glow of windows, the shimmer of the river, and, best of all, a small round pond at the edge of the village, where the water held the moon like a silver coin.

"What is it like down there?" she wondered. "What does it feel like to be part of the world, instead of just watching it?"

The other stars hummed and glimmered. "Stay in your place, Stella," they said. "The sky is where stars belong."

But one breezy night, Stella leaned out just a little too far to get a better look. A gust of wind brushed past her.

Whoosh!

She tumbled from the sky, spinning and tumbling in a long silver streak, down past the clouds, past the treetops, and SPLASH! straight into the village pond.

Down, down, down she sank, into the cool, dark water.

Her light flickered. "Oh no," she whispered. "I've fallen. I can't get back up."

She sat on the muddy bottom, glowing faintly, and she felt very small and very scared. The water was quiet and strange. Everything was dark except for her own little light.
