The Boy Who Listened to Wings
Chapter 1: Sujit
Every morning, before the village woke, a little brown hen tapped three times on the wooden wall beside Sujit.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Sujit answered with three soft clicks of his tongue.
That was how their mornings began.
Beyond the chicken coop lay a village in Fiji, where coconut palms leaned toward the sea. Sujit could see a narrow strip of sky through a gap in the boards. Sometimes it was blue. Sometimes it turned silver with rain.
He knew the chickens well: the white one that stole crumbs, the speckled one that disliked puddles, and the brown hen that always slept nearby.
People were harder to understand.
Their voices came quickly. Their hands moved suddenly. Sujit had spent so much of his childhood shut away that the world outside felt enormous.
One morning, he found the coop door open.
The brown hen stepped through it.
