The Casino That Whispered at 4 A.M.
Chapter 1: Click
The first thing I noticed was the missing streetlight.
It was such a small thing that most people would have walked right past it. A single metal pole standing at the corner of Mercer Avenue, its glass bulb dark and empty, surrounded by a circle of cracked pavement. For years, the city had ignored it. People passed beneath it every day without looking up.
But one morning, just after four o’clock, I found a handwritten note taped around the pole.
The paper was yellowed and damp from the night air.
It only had one sentence written on it.
"Some places remember who they take."
I stood there for almost a minute, staring at those words.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes your mind searches for any excuse to make something strange feel ordinary.
