The Clues We Kept

Chapter 1: Memories

Twenty years after Daniel gave her the crossword, Elise found it while looking for something else.

That was often how the important things returned.

She had gone to the bedroom bookshelf in search of an old receipt. Their washing machine had begun making a sound like a spoon trapped inside a metal bucket, and Daniel believed the warranty paperwork might still be tucked into one of their household folders.

Elise knew better.

“You never put receipts in folders,” she called toward the hallway.

“I do sometimes,” Daniel replied.

“You put them in books.”

There was a pause.

“Books are folders with more pages.”

She smiled despite herself.
