Chapter 1: The Favors We Carry

The first sign that something had changed was a small white envelope sitting between the grocery receipts and the pile of unopened mail.

It was nothing special. No bright colors. No urgent words printed across the front. Just a plain envelope with the school district’s name in the corner and her home address written neatly beneath it.

Mara picked it up while standing barefoot on the kitchen floor, waiting for the coffee machine to finish making its slow morning noises.

Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows. The kind of rain that made the whole neighborhood smell like wet pavement and old trees. Her son’s backpack was leaning against the chair, half-open, with a forgotten permission slip sticking out.
