The Last Coat Hook
Chapter 1: Bellweather Train
The first coat appeared on a Tuesday morning, hanging from a hook that had been empty for twenty-three years.
It was a man's winter coat, dark brown and heavy with rain. Water gathered beneath it in a neat black crescent on the floorboards. In one pocket was a paper ticket, softened almost to pulp. The date had faded, but the destination could still be read.
Bellweather.
No trains had stopped at Bellweather since 1998.
Mara Vale stood in the lost-property room with her ring of station keys pressed into her palm. Behind her, the old radiator knocked twice and fell silent. She could smell wet wool, iron dust, and the bitter coffee cooling on her desk.
“Tom?” she called.
Her voice traveled through the empty waiting room and came back smaller.
Tom Hales, the morning porter, came in with his cheeks pink from the cold.
“Did you put this here?” Mara asked.
Tom looked at the coat. His smile disappeared.
