The Last Page of Her Diary

Chapter 1: A grandson promises to find the person from his grandmother’s old diary.

The first time Daniel saw his grandmother cry, she was holding a photograph of a man who wasn’t his grandfather.

She sat beside her bedroom window, an old blue diary open across her knees. In the photograph, a young man stood outside a railway station, holding a suitcase in one hand and a sunflower in the other.

“Who is he, Grandma?”

Eleanor quickly wiped her cheek.

“Someone I knew before you started calling me Grandma.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“Did you love him?”

She studied the photograph for a long moment.

“Yes.”

Outside, rain tapped against the glass.
