The Morning I Held a Stranger’s Hand
Chapter 1: my heart stopped
I still remember the sound before I remember the accident.
It was the kind of early morning silence that feels almost unnatural. The roads were mostly empty, the sky was still gray, and everything around me seemed frozen between night and day. I had driven that same stretch of road many times before, but that morning felt different from the moment I left my house.
I was in nursing school at the time, buried under assignments, clinical preparation, and the constant pressure of trying to prove I belonged in a profession where every mistake could matter. I had decided to leave earlier than usual so I could get ahead on paperwork before my clinical rotation.
It was nothing special. Just another tired student trying to be responsible.
At least, that was what I thought.
A few miles down the road, I noticed something scattered across the highway.
At first, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
Pieces of metal were everywhere. Plastic fragments covered the pavement. There were marks on the road that told a story I didn’t want to imagine. The farther I drove, the more my stomach tightened.
Then I saw the vehicles.
Three cars.
