The Night We Chose Each Other
Chapter 1: Sweetheart
Six years is a long time when you are only twenty.
It is long enough for school uniforms to become old photographs, for awkward hallway conversations to turn into late-night phone calls, and for two teenagers who once worried about exams to begin wondering what kind of adults they might become.
For six years, he had been beside me through all of it.
He was my high school sweetheart, although the phrase always sounded too small for what we had. It made our relationship sound like a sweet memory tucked into the back of a yearbook. But he was not a memory. He was present in the ordinary parts of my life: the person who waited when I needed time, listened when I struggled to explain myself, and never made kindness feel like something I had to earn.
He was also my first everything.
My first real crush. My first boyfriend. The first person whose name could make me smile at my phone for no sensible reason. The first person who knew when I was upset even when I insisted that I was fine.
Whenever I thought about how young we had been when we started dating, I felt amazed that we had grown without growing apart. We had changed, of course. We were no longer the shy teenagers who measured time by school bells. Still, beneath every change, I could recognize the same boy: kind, patient, and quietly understanding.
Yesterday was his twenty-first birthday.
We began the day at Mass. The church was peaceful, its familiar stillness wrapping around us as sunlight filtered softly through the windows. Sitting near him, I found myself thinking about all the birthdays we had already shared. Six years of simple greetings, small gifts, private jokes, and wishes spoken over candles.
This birthday felt different—not because I knew what the night would bring, but because twenty-one seemed important. It stood at the edge of something new. I looked at him and tried to match the young man beside me with the boy I had first loved in high school. Both versions were there somehow.
