The Number She Remembered

Chapter 1: GF

The message arrived at 6:17 on a rainy Tuesday evening.

Hi. I don’t know if you remember me. It’s Mara.

Daniel was standing over the kitchen sink when his phone lit up. One hand was buried in warm dishwater, holding a chipped blue plate. The other smelled faintly of the lemon soap his girlfriend always bought.

Outside, rain tapped against the fire escape. A bus sighed at the corner, and somewhere upstairs, a child was practicing the same five notes on a piano.

Daniel read the message twice.

Then a third time.

Three years had passed since he had seen Mara. He had changed apartments, jobs, and phone numbers. He had stopped staying out until sunrise. He no longer carried crumpled cash in every pocket or woke in unfamiliar hotel rooms with no clear memory of how he had arrived.

He was thirty-four now. He owned matching towels. There were vegetables in his refrigerator.

His girlfriend, Claire, was in the bedroom folding laundry while talking to her sister on the phone. Every few minutes, Daniel heard her laugh. It was a warm, easy sound—the kind that made a home feel settled.

He placed the wet plate on the drying rack and looked at the message again.
