The Phone That Rang With Its Cord Cut

Chapter 1: Telephone

The telephone rang even though its cord had been cut.

Elena heard it while waiting beneath the old iron roof of Torino Porta Nuova. The sound was thin and metallic, almost lost beneath rolling suitcases, platform announcements, and the hiss of an arriving train.

She turned toward the wall.

The payphone was still there.

Its blue casing had faded to gray. Scratches covered the plastic hood, and someone had pushed a folded bus ticket into the coin slot. A severed black cable hung beneath it like a dead root.

It rang again.

Elena stood perfectly still.

She had returned to Turin to empty her mother’s apartment. Three days earlier, she had packed away the dresses that still smelled faintly of lavender, the chipped coffee cups, and the reading glasses left beside an unfinished crossword puzzle.

Her mother had been gone for six months, but Elena still carried her phone everywhere. Some foolish part of her expected a call.

Did you eat?
