The Photograph Facing the Wall

Chapter 1: Strange Door

# The Room Behind the Photograph

The first strange thing about the old house was not the locked room.

It was the photograph.

It sat on the mantel above the fireplace, covered in a thin layer of dust, facing slightly toward the wall as if someone had tried to hide it without making it obvious.

When Daniel moved into the house, he noticed it on his first evening.

The place had belonged to an elderly couple who had lived there for almost fifty years. After they both passed away, their nephew sold the property quickly. He told Daniel there was nothing unusual about it.

“Just an old house,” the nephew said while handing him the keys. “It needs someone young to bring it back to life.”

Daniel liked that idea.

At thirty-six years old, he felt like his own life needed bringing back to life too.

The house was small, sitting at the end of a quiet street where the trees leaned over the road and dropped leaves onto parked cars. The neighbors were friendly but distant. The kind of people who waved from their gardens but rarely invited anyone inside.
