The Porch Light No One Wired

Chapter 1: Something seen in Mirror

The house on Willow Lane had been empty for eleven years, but every evening at exactly 7:15, the porch light turned on.

Nobody knew why.

The electricity had been disconnected years ago. The last owner, an old woman named Eleanor Voss, had died alone in the upstairs bedroom, and after her funeral the house was locked, its curtains drawn, its garden slowly swallowed by weeds.

Yet every night, as the sun disappeared behind the trees, a warm yellow light appeared beside the front door.

The neighbors noticed.

They always noticed.

But nobody went near the house.

People in small towns have a way of learning when not to ask questions. They know which doors stay closed, which names are spoken quietly, and which stories are better left unfinished.

Mara Bell had never been good at leaving things unfinished.

At twenty-eight, she had built her life around fixing things other people abandoned.
