The Repairing Shop
Chapter 1: The Blue Bowl
The small brass key sat in a blue ceramic bowl beside the kitchen door for almost twenty years.
It was the kind of thing most people would overlook. The bowl was chipped on one side, the paint faded from too many years of sunlight, and the key itself had lost its shine. It belonged to a house that no longer existed in the way it once had.
But every morning, before leaving for work, Clara Bennett would pick up the bowl, move it slightly while wiping the counter, and put it back in exactly the same place.
She never used the key.
She never threw it away.
And she never explained why she kept it.
Her neighbors knew Clara as the woman who always remembered birthdays, watered the old man's plants when he went to visit his grandchildren, and brought soup to anyone on the street who caught a cold.
She worked as a librarian at the small town library, the kind of place where the floorboards creaked in winter and the smell of old books mixed with coffee from the tiny machine behind the front desk.
Clara had spent most of her life taking care of things.
Books.
