The Stories That Brought Her Back
Chapter 1: Hospital Stories
For eleven months, Daniel ended every visit with the same words.
“And when you wake up, I’ll ask you properly.”
He always waited afterward.
The hospital room would fall silent except for the soft rhythm of the machines beside Emma’s bed. A monitor traced her heartbeat in pale green lines, while the ventilator released a quiet mechanical sigh.
Daniel knew she probably could not answer him. The doctors had been honest about that from the beginning. They could not promise that Emma heard his voice or understood the stories he told.
But “probably” was not the same as “never.”
So he kept talking.
On the morning Emma woke up, Daniel almost stayed home.
It was raining hard enough to blur the city beyond his apartment window. He had slept badly, his throat hurt, and his car had refused to start twice that week. For the first time in months, the thought entered his mind that missing one morning might not matter.
Then he looked at the chair beside his bed.
