The Tuesday Shirt
Chapter 1: The Question That Changed the Silence
Every night at 11:45, the old office hallway filled with a quiet sound that most people never noticed.
A chair moving.
A drawer closing.
A small desk lamp clicking off.
The building was almost empty by then. The cleaning staff had already passed through, the elevators moved slower, and the city outside the glass windows became a blur of headlights and rain. But on the third floor, behind a small gray door with a fading nameplate, someone was always finishing one last task before leaving.
The door belonged to Mara.
For six years, Mara had worked the overnight shift at a customer support office that never truly slept. During the day, the building was full of voices, meetings, and footsteps. At night, it became a different world. The humming computers sounded louder. The coffee machine seemed lonely. Even the clock on the wall appeared to move more slowly.
Mara liked the quiet.
People often assumed quiet meant sadness, but for Mara, quiet had always been a place where she could breathe.
She was the kind of person who smiled at everyone. She remembered the names of security guards, asked the cleaning workers about their families, and helped new employees find their way around the confusing computer system.
