The Tuesday Towels
Chapter 1: The Woman Who Never Arrived Empty-Handed
The first thing people noticed about Willow was that she never arrived empty-handed.
Sometimes it was a paper bag filled with warm cinnamon rolls, the kind that left the whole kitchen smelling like butter, sugar, and toasted pecans. Sometimes it was a small bag of toys she found at a thrift store because she “just happened to see something the kids would like.” Sometimes it was nothing at all except her familiar laugh coming through the front door.
But there was always something.
Not because anyone expected it.
Because that was simply who Willow was.
She was the kind of person who quietly carried pieces of happiness into other people’s homes and never asked anyone to notice.
For years, she had been the extra chair at the family table, the person who remembered everyone’s favorite snack, the one who knew which child needed a bedtime story and which one needed a few minutes alone.
She was not a mother.
She had never wanted to be one.
In fact, Willow often joked that children were wonderful “as long as they eventually went back to their parents.”
