The Wrong Name and the Right Wedding

Chapter 1: Strange Wedding

Long before he became a husband, a father, and the subject of a story his family would tell for decades, Daniel was the resident assistant on an upper floor of a college dormitory.

He was an upperclassman then, old enough to know which rules mattered and which problems could be solved with patience, a spare key, or a late-night cup of coffee. His floor was rarely quiet. Doors slammed at every hour. Music drifted through the hallways. Someone was always borrowing change for the vending machine, searching for a missing textbook, or explaining why the dent in the wall had definitely been there before the semester began.

Daniel knew every resident by name. He knew who studied until dawn, who called home every Sunday, and who needed a reminder that socks left in a communal hallway did not become public property.

Then there was Michael, one of the young men living on his floor.

Michael had a girlfriend who visited often.

Her name was Anna.

The first time Daniel noticed her, she was standing outside Michael’s room with two paper cups in her hands, trying to knock without spilling either one. Daniel happened to be walking past.

“Need some help?” he asked.

“Unless you can make him answer his door, probably not.”

Daniel knocked twice, louder than she had.
