Married Man

The first time I learned she had cheated on me, I was standing beneath the cold fluorescent lights at work, trying to understand how my ordinary life had suddenly become unfamiliar.

For a year and a half, she had been the person I called when something good happened. She knew which stories from work would make me laugh and which ones would leave me irritated for the rest of the evening. I had trusted her with the unremarkable details that make up a relationship: plans for the weekend, complaints about long days, little hopes for the future.

Then, in May, I discovered that she had been sleeping with one of my coworkers behind my back. It had not been a single mistake or a brief lapse in judgment. It had been happening throughout our relationship.

The knowledge changed the shape of everything I remembered. Late replies, unexplained absences, moments when she had seemed distracted—all of them returned to me carrying new meanings. Even the happiest memories felt damaged, as though someone had gone back and written lies across them.

We ended the relationship immediately. At least, I thought we did.

But the breakup did not bring clarity. Instead, every conversation turned into an argument about what I had supposedly done wrong.
