The Bag She Never Asked For
His wife's tote swallows keys, receipts and a child's water bottle, and it bothers him. Years ago her bags said something about who she was.
Bag
The first time I noticed the Target bag, my wife was standing beside the kitchen counter, searching through it for her keys.
It was one of those large, practical totes sold near the front of the store—the kind designed to carry everything without attracting attention. A child’s water bottle leaned against one side. Receipts, snacks, and folded papers filled the bottom. Her phone had disappeared somewhere beneath it all.
She kept digging until she finally found the keys.
“There they are,” she said, smiling as though the bag had not just swallowed five minutes of her life.
There was nothing wrong with it. It worked. It carried what she needed, and she never complained.
That was precisely why it bothered me.
