Ultrasound
The blue cup survived the divorce.
It survived the slammed cabinet doors, the packing tape, the lawyers’ envelopes, and the afternoon a moving man dropped an entire box of dishes on the front steps.
It was not an expensive cup. The handle had been glued twice, and a thin crack ran from the rim toward the faded picture of a yellow bird. But every morning, before the sun reached the kitchen window, Claire filled it with coffee and held it between both hands.
Some things stayed warm longer when you held them carefully.
She had bought the cup at a church sale when she was twenty-three, newly married and still learning which groceries Daniel liked. He preferred creamy peanut butter, never crunchy. He hated onions unless they were chopped so finely he could pretend they were not there. He left wet towels on the bathroom floor and whistled the same four notes whenever he searched for his keys.
Back then, those habits had seemed like the beginnings of a shared language.
