Before my father was my father, he belonged to the Church.

He was a young Catholic priest then—earnest, devoted, and still discovering what kind of life he had been called to live. Each morning, he stood before the altar and spoke words older than anyone in the cathedral. He listened to confessions, visited the sick, comforted grieving families, and tried to become the person people believed a priest should be.

My mother first knew him as “Father.”

She volunteered at his parish, helping deliver food, medicine, and other necessities to elderly people who could no longer leave their homes. It was quiet work, mostly unnoticed. There were no ceremonies or public congratulations—only grocery bags, prescription bottles, narrow hallways, and grateful people waiting behind locked doors.

Sometimes my father accompanied the volunteers.

“Mrs. Donnelly needs her medicine before lunch,” my mother might remind him while checking the delivery list.
