If you met my dad today, you would probably think he had always known exactly how to be a father.
He is the kind of man who remembers the small things. He knows how my mom takes her coffee and which stories will make her laugh even when she is trying to stay annoyed with him. At dinner, he sometimes tells the same jokes we have heard a hundred times, but my mom still smiles before he reaches the punch line. He notices, of course. Making her laugh seems to matter more to him than whether the joke is any good.
He has also been at every soccer game I have played since I was five.
Every single one.
When I was little, I thought that was simply what dads did. They stood near the field, called out encouragement, and clapped even when their daughter missed an easy shot. As I got older, I began to understand the effort behind his attendance. My dad works as a construction foreman. His days begin early, and he often comes home tired, with dust clinging to his work clothes and the strain of the day still sitting in his shoulders.
Yet somehow, when I looked toward the sideline, he was always there.
