Before the accident, Daniel knew Claire only in the casual way people sometimes know a friend of a friend.

They had met at a few dinners and birthday gatherings. They had exchanged polite smiles, shared the occasional joke, and once argued playfully about whether pineapple belonged on pizza. Daniel remembered that Claire laughed with her whole face. Claire remembered that Daniel always stayed behind to help carry dishes into the kitchen.

Neither of them imagined that their lives would become connected.

Then came the accident.

Daniel remembered the noise more clearly than the pain—a violent crash of metal, followed by shouting and the sharp alarm that echoed across the factory floor. After that, his memories broke into fragments: the ceiling above the ambulance stretcher, bright hospital lights, a nurse asking him to squeeze her hand, and a doctor explaining that recovery would take time.

By the time he left the hospital, he could barely move without assistance.
