The Lemon Magnet
Held by a chipped lemon magnet, a hotel receipt shows sixty-six percent more than Daniel and his wife agreed to spend, with a small blue star at the bottom.
Magnet
The receipt stayed on the refrigerator for three days.
It was held there by a chipped yellow magnet shaped like a lemon, the kind sold in airport gift shops beside postcards and tiny bottles of olive oil. At the bottom of the receipt, beneath the hotel charges and restaurant bills, someone had drawn a small blue star in pen.
Daniel noticed the star before he noticed the total.
He stood in the kitchen on Sunday morning with one hand wrapped around a mug of coffee that had already gone cold. Outside, rain tapped softly against the window above the sink. The gutters made their familiar choking sound. Somewhere upstairs, his daughter, Lucy, was dragging her suitcase across the floor instead of unpacking it.
The total was sixty-six percent more than the budget he and his wife had agreed on.
Daniel did the calculation twice, although he was good with numbers and had understood it the first time. He worked in the accounts office of a building-supply company, where every day he found missing decimals and duplicate invoices. Numbers comforted him because they stayed where you put them. They did not say one thing on Monday and mean another by Friday.
