The Chair on the Curb
The chair had been sitting on the curb for three days before Odessa finally took it home.
It was autumn, in a neighborhood filled with narrow houses and small yards, where people left unwanted belongings outside and others picked them up rather than spending money on something new. The chair was an old oak rocking chair, its cane seat faded and yellow with age. Someone had wrapped a piece of twine around one arm, as if trying to keep it together, although the chair itself did not appear damaged.
Odessa was fifty-eight years old. She had raised three children and lost one husband. Over the years, she had developed a simple rule about discarded furniture: if it survived the rain, it was worth saving.
The chair had already survived two nights of rain.
With the help of a neighborhood boy, who offered to carry it for five dollars, Odessa lifted it into the back of her Corolla. She gave him ten instead because she had always been the kind of person who gave a little more than expected.
At first, she placed the chair on her back porch, planning to restore it during the weekend. But one evening, she sat in it with a glass of sweet tea, just to test whether it was comfortable.
