The Oak Letter Box

The Oak Letter Box — story cover

An email arrives three years after Nora last heard from the Bell family — and the letter box at the old house is hiding more than mail.

Confrotation

The email arrived on a wet Thursday morning, three years after Nora had last heard from anyone in the Bell family.

She was standing in her small kitchen, waiting for the kettle to boil, when her phone lit up beside the sink. Rain tapped against the window. The old refrigerator hummed unevenly, and somewhere in the apartment above her, a child dragged a chair across the floor.

The subject line contained only four words:

Regarding the wooden box.

Nora did not need to open the message to know which box it meant.

It sat at the end of her kitchen counter, beneath a row of copper measuring spoons. It was made of dark oak, worn smooth at the corners, with a narrow slot across the top. Bills went into it. Birthday cards, grocery coupons, and letters she could not bring herself to throw away went into it too.
