Twenty years ago, Tom Renwick disappeared from the bridge at Millbrook. When the drought drains the river, the town finds what it kept — and what it has been hiding.

The Drought

The summer the river died was the hottest Millbrook had ever known. By August the water had dropped below the old railway bridge, and by September the bridge stood over a long, grey channel of mud and exposed stones, like a spine the town had forgotten it had.

They found the bicycle on a Tuesday, half-buried in silt under the second arch. It was rusted to the colour of the mud itself, but the licence plate on the frame was still readable, and the boy who found it went white and ran all the way to the police station without stopping.

Tom Renwick had disappeared from that bridge twenty years ago. He had been fifteen. His bicycle had been found leaning against the rail the morning he vanished, and the river had been searched, and dragged, and prayed over, and it had given up nothing. The town had decided, in the end, that Tom Renwick had run away — from the mill, from his father, from the smallness of Millbrook — and the decision had become a kind of civic fact, repeated at funerals and graduations like a verse of the town song.

Now the river had given back his bicycle, and with it the question the town had buried: if he ran, why did he leave his bike?

Nora Vale drove into Millbrook the same day. She had left at eighteen and sworn she would never come back, and she had kept the oath for twenty-two years, but she was the detective the county sent when a cold case surfaced, and she had not been able to think of a reason to refuse that did not sound like the truth. The truth was that she had known Tom Renwick. She had been fourteen, and she had been in love with him, and she had been the last person to see him alive.
